FIPNA has won a $1000 grant from the Citizen’s Committee for New York City to clean up and landscape the 238th Street step street.
The step street is a naturally beautiful element of our community, listed on our Historic Survey as a “contributing factor” to the Historic District.
We want to restore it to its original glory.
This will be a community gardening event, tentatively scheduled for Sunday, May 13. Stay tuned for more information on how you can get involved, and as always, let us know if you have any great ideas for improving our neighborhood.

I had always envisioned the West 238th Street Step street as one of the major gateways into Van Cortlandt Village Sorta reminds me of the primary entrance into San Francisco’s Chinatown without the pagoda lion statures.. The step street serves as the primary throughway from our residents on Sedgwick Avenue to commute to Manhattan via the No. 1 subway by walking to the on the West 238th Street subway station located on Broadway.
