Western John Muir Volunteer Day
Saturday May 14th meeting at 10am
Volunteers are needed to remove invasive plants and help native trees and shrubs as the Friends continue our efforts on the Western side of the John Muir Trail. Meet at the Friends Compost Site- enter the Park at Broadway and Mosholu Avenue.
Million Trees NYC Community Tree Giveaway
Sunday May 15th from 11am-1pm
Due to popular demand the Friends are pleased to offer community members FREE trees to plant on private property. This event is open to anyone living within the 5 boroughs. Trees cannot be planted in city parks, on terraces or rooftops, or in tree pits on the street. Information about the species of trees available, planting instructions and care will be available. Each person or community group is allowed one tree while supplies last. Meet at the Friends Compost Site- enter the Park at Broadway and Mosholu Avenue. This event is sponsored by MillionTreesNYC, David Rockefeller, Bloomberg Philanthropies and NYRP.
It’s My Park! Day at the Friends Compost Site/Garden
Saturday May 21st meeting from 10am-1pm
Once again the Friends are partnering with Urban Farming to grow fresh vegetables to donate. Come out and help us plant our garden, learn about what we are growing and turn and sift our compost bins. Bring a bag and take some compost home. Meet at the Compost Site- enter the Park at Broadway & Mosholu Avenue.
National Trails Day
Saturday June 4th from 10am-4pm
Volunteers are invited to work with the Friends’ Volunteer Trails Crew along the Western side of the John Muir Trail. Projects will focus on clearing, improving and maintaining the quality of the trail. A light lunch will be provided. RSVP required. Meet at the Compost Site- enter the Park at Broadway & Mosholu Avenue.
John Kieran Volunteer Day
Saturday June 11th meeting from 10am-1pm
Join us as we restore the beautiful John Kieran Nature Trail and the forest it transects which borders Van Cortlandt Lake and wetlands. Meet in the Park at Broadway and 242nd Street near the last stop of the 1 train.
Seven Wonders of Van Cortlandt Park
Wednesday June 15th from 6:30-8:30pm
There are many natural and historic wonders of Van Cortlandt Park. Come discover one of the Seven Wonders and help us determine the others. Bring a friend with you to meet the Friends and learn more about Van Cortlandt Park. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvre will be served. Everyone should wear shoes appropriate for a natural walking surface. Optional guided “hike” to one of the wonders. Van Cortlandt Park Riding Stables enter the Park at Broadway and Mosholu Ave. Parking is available. Please RSVP by June 8th.
