Ft. Independence resident Bob Drake asked Councilman Koppell to get a Greenstreet installed at Bailey Place and Fort Independence Street. Koppell, in the letter posted here, announces he has gotten The Parks Department and the Dept of Design and Construction to create a Greenstreet there, once the Bailey Place retaining wall is restored. Goodbye, ugly jersey barriers! Hello, nice green plants!

Wow- Great News! And I’m hearing about this first at your website- great work. This is the perfect place for a green zone- thank goodness Parks and DOT saw the sense of it. I can’t wait to see this happen.
It’ll take a little while — first the Bailey Place retaining wall has to be repaired — but it will be really nice to see! Watch this site for a slide show of other improvements we hope to win to Ft. Independence Street.
Works should start soon on the Bailey Place retaining wall. They will be installing new fire hydrants, water pipes, drainage pipes, etc. For that reason, the Fort Independence-Bailey Place triangle will not have trees — roots are a problem — but hopefully grass, flowers and shrubbery. A shout-out to Andrew Sandler in Oliver Koppell’s office for a very rapid, positive response! Now if we could just get some crosswalks on Fort Independence between Bailey Avenue and Sedgwick!
