Howard (Howie) Padernacht was a friend and neighbor on Giles Place, and the Sholem Aleichem. Many would call him the Mayor of Giles Place. He practically patrolled the community even to the point of walking up and down the street wheeling a garbage can to pick up litter.
Before I met Howie, though, I met his father who was the super at the Sholem Aleichem. Later on, I met Howie and Pam, as my parents owned the home at the entrance to the housing complex.
Howie joined with our family in the political world at that time. Together we saved the Sholem Aleichem when we got HPD to provide the needed financing. Moreover, Howie was an active member of the Friends of Jerome Park Reservoir, and participated in the fight to save our community from the filter plant in our front yard — right IN the reservoir!
Finally this year, I got to know Pam and Howie’s three sons as adults — Generations of Padernachts on Giles Place!
