Strike Update Day 118 – (6/16/2008)

Day 118 – I will get to the strike line and the goings on shortly. I just want to remind everyone that this is a neighborhood blog, I try to keep everyone in our little neighborhood informed about what is happening. Currently I have devoted the blog to the 1199 SEIU strike against the Kingsbridge Heights Rehabilitation & Care Center, I write daily updates and try to report what is going on and how the strike is progressing.

Recently some of the workers that are inside the nursing home have come to this blog to vent, cause trouble or just be outright rude. I will not stand for this kind of behavior and will remove any comments that I feel are inappropriate to the current conversation. This is a moderated blog and I have the right to post or not post any comments that I see fit. Please see our posting rules for a thorough explanation of what is and is not acceptable.

I am sorry that I have to bring all this up but in the past couple of days there have been many comments from unknown authors that have nothing to do with the post at hand. I don’t have a problem with people having a lively conversation but when it comes to outright name calling it will not be tolerated.

Now that all that is out of the way, let’s get to the daily journal.

First thing this morning I saw a State car outside the nursing home, I haven’t really seen the state around that often and was surprised when I did see them there today.

Then of course we have the usual, cars parked everywhere.

The funny thing was that all these cars were parked there for quite some time that a police car actually pulled up and parked behind some of them.

Now according to the Captain all these cars are supposed to be getting tickets, I didn’t see one ticket written the entire day. The best was when the head of the private security pulled up and parked right on the sidewalk as well.

Another car parked at a different time for a good deal of time.

Now mind you I did bring all this up at the community council meeting and the Captain assured me that this will not be happening, but as you can clearly see it still is and it happens all day long even right in front of the NYPD.

There was some good news today, since yesterday was Father’s Day, the members decided to celebrate on the line today. The Women members cooked up some great food for the Dad’s and FIPNA brought some desert. If you remember on Mother’s Day the Dad’s and FIPNA did the same for them.

What a good time everyone had. The food was great, the desert even better, there was card games and dominoes. Everyone was in good spirits and having fun.

Of course that couldn’t last, apparently two replacement workers took it upon themselves to purposely walk through the picket line right by the members sitting down playing dominoes and allegedly start a verbal altercation. The next thing I saw was a big commotion and punches being thrown, I ran over to stop the fighting and I saw chairs being thrown and people on the ground. At first I thought it was two striking members but I soon realized that it was two scabs and the striking members.

The private security guards from the nursing home also stepped in to stop the fighting and between everyone the altercation was squashed very quickly. There was no police presence at the time of the incident.

You can see one of the replacement workers being held by the security guards and then lead into the nursing home.

Is this really necessary? It is bad enough that these replacement workers are crossing a picket line do they have to come here and instigate trouble? It is my understanding that one of the members will be pressing charges against the replacement worker as he was slammed to the floor during the altercation.

During the evening I was told that once again Helen had left the building and was met by a bunch of the striking members, I do not know all the specifics as I was not there at the time. I was told that they were yelling at her as she got into her taxi cab.

Till tomorrow, STAND STRONG!

FOR YOUR INFORMATION THE STATE CAR BELONGS TO A NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES WHO VISITS WITH ONE OF HER CLIENTS TO FOLLOW UP ON THE RESIDENT. NO NEED TO BE CONCERNED

WAY TO GO PHIL…..I WOULD LIKE TO APOLOGIZE TO THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE FOR GETTING CAUGHT UP IN THE NASTY, DENIGRATING,CRUEL AND TOTALLY UNECESSARY COMMENTARY WITH THE SCABS THAT REMAINED INSIDE…….. HOWEVER, WHEN PEOPLE CHOOSE TO BE VILE AND OUTRIGHTLY MALICIOUS BY DEMEANING THE PEOPLE ON STRIKE, I HAD TO TAKE A STAND,ON THE SIDE OF THE STRIKERS, MOST OF WHOM DON’T HAVE THE ACCESS TO A COMPUTER, TO DEFEND THEMSELVES………AS LONG AS THE INSIDERS WERE HIDING BEHIND THEIR AKA’S , THEY MADE A LOT OF VERY NASTY, CRUDE,DEMEANING,INSINUATIONS. AS SOON AS WE FOUND OUT WHO THEY WERE, THEN IT WAS “STOP PICKING ON ME”…….. IT IS SO UNECESSARY TO GO BEHIND THE BACKS OF PEOPLE YOU HAVE WORKED WITH FOR YEARS AND MAKE SUCH DEROGATORY, INFLAMATORY AND PROVOCATIVE STATEMENTS…….. THIS STRIKE HAS GONE ON FOR 119 DAYS NOW AND IT IS HARD ENOUGH AS IT IS, WITHOUT THE INSIDERS UNECESSARILY ADDING TO THE SITUATION…….YOU CAN BE ASSURED THAT WE HAVE NO INTENTION OF DEMEANING OURSELVES , THIS BLOG OR THE REPUTATION OF FIPNA AGAIN………….THAT IS NOT WHAT TINA[RIP] NOR I HAD IN MIND WHEN WE CREATED FIPNA SO MANY YEARS AGO……..

hello all workers on strike at KingsBridge Nursing Home

Keep up the fight!!! I know what the hell you are going through, since I am a former employee of the facility. I know for a fact you deserve what you are fighting for, even if she is not listening.
That damn lady is going to burn in hell !!! All things and stuff she has put people through.

  7. Monique

as far as the press is concerned they should be looking into how she so called fired people, but instead was really cooking the damn books. The should also reach out to former employees, regarding what took place at the facility. No matter what takes places with HELEN, the residents do not deserve this nor do the workers!!!

GIVE THEM THEIR DAMN MONEY, HEALTH CARE ETC.

i feel as though the scabs have no right walking on the side of the strikers because if they thik about it all they doing is replacing others for a period of time but once these strikers get what they want they will be gone…….i dont understand y the scab are so stupid with there actings they need to realize that they need to be considerate because they wouldnt want to switch positon…..but this needs to end …..this is gone to far….helen just give up cuz ur not going to win,,…ur not hurting no one besides ur self…because in the end u going to have to give up and lose money and mostly ur job
