Day 109 & 110 – This is my weekend wrap-up post compiling both days into one post. First let me just say it was a hot hot hot weekend, it is just the beginning of June and already we have temperatures near 100 degrees.
So once again officer Vanputten was assigned to the post here at the strike line. Why is it necessary to send this one particular officer here? This officer just does not know how to deal with people, every time he is here there is always some type of issue.
Well once again he insists on parking his patrol car in the flow of traffic which in turn causes unnecessary hazards for motorists. I am sure you remember when he parked his car angled into the street and cause an accident when an Access-A-Ride bus couldn’t maneuver successfully around the patrol car and instead hit the front of my car. That accident would have never happened if it weren’t for his carelessness in the way he parks his vehicle. To add insult to injury this officer wrote a $115.00 summons for being “Parked in a Safety Zone”, mind you this was the time that signs nor barricades were posted! Maybe I should have had a “Doctor on Call” paper in my window at that time? He then outright lied on the accident report stating that there were no independent witnesses to the accident when there were at least 20 striking members who saw the whole thing.
Today was no different, he was parked on the top of Cannon sticking out onto the street as well as overlapping Giles, so any vehicle turning from Giles onto Cannon would have to make a wide turn to avoid hitting the patrol car and possibly hit the strike pen. When asked why he was parked that way his statement was “So I can see down Giles Place”, how come he is the ONLY officer that parks haphazardly? All of the other officers pull fully on the sidewalk and pull down further so that the entire car is off the road. As for seeing down Giles Place, the strike pens are on Cannon! Also if it is so necessary to see down Giles why not get out of the car and stand on the corner? Most other officers that are assigned here don’t even get a vehicle. This officer really needs to get some sensitivity training on how to deal with the public.
I see that someone added some cash to Helen today, it is only fitting since she is still making huge profits off the backs of others whom she doesn’t even appreciate.
It is a shame that the police fear Helen so much that they hide from her cameras just to answer their cell phone. It has been alleged that Helen has been recording everything the police do and then send video in to 1 Police Plaza. I can’t imagine that it is a problem for an officer to answer their cell phone, but apparently it is by the way this officer has to hide to do it.
Lights out for Helen? All the bright lights on the front of the nursing home suddenly turned off, maybe you need a bigger circuit breaker!
Today (Sunday) there is another article in the NY Daily News about this ongoing strike.
I can’t believe that Helen can show up to court unprepared and all she gets is a postponement! What is wrong with this picture, these workers have been on strike since February 20, 2008 and nobody can do anything except set a court date for August! I mean come on already is it because the majority of these workers are Black? I would hope in this day and age that it is not the case but it sure seems that way.
Another point to ponder is why are nursing homes allowed to make such a huge profit when they are getting paid with tax dollars? I realize that all businesses are in business to make a profit but there needs to be some sort of cap put on this greed.
One last thing, in regards to the new staff, there are so many new faces changing all the time. How can these replacement workers really care about their job when they know they could be on the street any day if the strike is settled. It is amazing that the management says the workers abandoned their jobs when in fact it is their right to strike as a union because of unfair labor practices.
Till tomorrow, STAND STRONG!
