Day 93 – It seems like everyday a new article or video or newscast is covering this strike, today the NY Daily News has printed an article about the strike and also about our fallen friend, Audrey Smith-Campbell.
You can read the article on their website here: A company profits, a woman dies
This article really hits home when you think this could have been your mother or grandmother. She gave 30 years of dedicated service and in her passing the woman who was her boss (Helen Sieger) did not send flowers or even lift the phone to give her condolences to the family. Audrey had worked for Helen since she bought the nursing home some 14 years or so ago, to not even acknowledge Audreys death is just ludicrous.
When our long time FIPNA board member passed away Helen sent a huge bouquet of flowers to the funeral home, we all looked at it like a smack in the face as the board member despised Helen for what she has done to our once beautiful neighborhood.
As you can imagine there has been a lot of comments posted on the Daily News site about the story, please feel free to click over to their site and read them and add your own if you like. One comment that caught my eye was “Excuse me, but where is the NYS Dept. of Health in this whole tragedy for workers and their patients”? This has been my exact same question for sometime now, where are they?
Today I received an email showing what the responsibility of the DOH is to the residents of the nursing home, this is part of what was received:
1. The DOH Inspector is supposed to compare the Nurses Logs with the Comprehensive Care Plan for each patient. They do not have to see the patient, just the logs and CCP. As long as they match “everything is ok”. Unless they get a complaint, then they have to follow up.
So if nobody is calling in to complain then the inspectors never see the patients? They are just looking at log books? If this is true than anything is possible given the fact of the recent story about patient neglect that was uncovered by hidden cameras brought in by a family member. The records were falsified in that case and the inspectors didn’t know anything about it until the video surfaced.
So at day 93 we are all still sitting on the outside wondering what is really going on inside, is the DOH really there? Why doesn’t the nursing home let anyone in to see? Not me, not the newspapers, not tv news, nobody. What are they hiding? Some of the “insiders” have come to this blog and stated many things, but nothing has been shown to us that everything is fine inside.
Remember a while back I was talking about a resident of the nursing home that we nicknamed the “Mayor” of our block, where has he been? Is he ok? The last time anyone saw him he was in a wheelchair which was unusual because he was always walking up and down the street. Now we have not seen him at all.
Another person that has shed some light on this strike is Congressman Anthony Weiner, he brought it to the floor of the House of Representatives. His short video clip was featured on C-SPAN titled “Honoring a Fallen Health Care Worker”. You can view it on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVkrd_paqwc or just click the play button below.
Hopefully with all this publicity it will make everyone aware of what is happening on this little street in the Bronx. One woman has decided that no matter what she is right and everyone else is wrong, can it be? Can we all be wrong while Helen Sieger is right? Read this blog from day one and you can form your own opinion of which side is wrong in this strike.
Lastly, a comment from an “Insider” on yesterdays post read:
2) 1199 seiu is a gigantic union with alot of money. if the deceased woman could not afford medication, why didnt the union buy it for her? 400 dollars a month for a multimillion dollar union is a drop in the bucket. im just confused is all.
My response was simply, “As for 1199, we all know they have many members as well as a lot of money, that is not the point. The point is this woman wouldn’t need the union or anyone else for that matter to pay for her medicine if she was not on strike because your boss took away her health care benefits. What don’t you understand about this one fact? In this day and age of astronomical medication prices one cannot afford to pay for their own medicine. This is one of the reasons people find jobs with a good benefit plan. Until this country institutes some form of universal health care it is only going to get worse”.
Till tomorrow, STAND STRONG!
