Day 50 – The big 50! Usually the big 50 is a happy occasion that is celebrated with a party, but of course this is not a celebratory milestone. This strike has lingered on for 50 days and it doesn’t look like it is ending anytime soon. I cannot believe that Helen is not even negotiating, what are you waiting for Helen? Sign the contract and give the workers what they deserve.
The Riverdale Press published a nice article about the candle light vigil that we held on Friday, however they missed the point that it was for peace and justice because of the day we chose, the 40th anniversary of when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. We wanted the vigil to show our support to the striking members but we also wanted it to be a tribute to the late Dr. King.
Today the picket line was strong, there were a lot of members that were full of energy, singing and chanting for a good part of the day.
It was a pretty quiet day until the horde of scabs came out of the building around 3pm.
She seems very friendly, no? This is what is taking care of the patients inside the nursing home.
After these scabs passed by I found out that there was an alleged altercation on Giles Place between the scabs and the union members. Allegedly there was a dispute between the two and one of the hired security stepped in and threw water on one of the union members. Of course this is all unconfirmed because even the PD didn’t see any of this happen.
With all these security guards, why did any altercation happen? Why are they not intervening if the situation turns hostile? It seems to me that they are instigating some of these altercations, why do they constantly verbally fight with the striking members? Shouldn’t they just ignore everyone around them and do what they are paid to do?
Tonight it seems that someone in Cannon Heights decided that it is ok to blast opera music out their window around 9pm, this is the same building that keeps complaining about the noise the strikers are making on the picket line. You are not helping the problem by adding to it.
Please have a look at our latest Newsletter Alert(PDF), will you please call Naomi Rivera as stated on the flyer it would benefit the whole community and perhaps help to get some attention to this strike that has yet to receive the attention that it deserves.
Till tomorrow, STAND STRONG!
