Day 42 – The weather is not being to friendly again today, although it is much warmer it is still a rainy day. The striking members didn’t seem to care as they had something to celebrate today. First up the union president George Gresham called on state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to investigate the home’s owner for allegedly misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars. You can read the Daily News story here.
The State Labor Department was here watching the picket line and also watching as all the replacement workers (SCABS) were going into the nursing home. The union members are now qualified to receive unemployment benefits retroactive to the start date of the strike (Feb 20.) because of the fact there are replacement workers. This was great news and I think that it the reason the striking members were so happy and exuberant today. Please see the day 42 video at the bottom of this message for their celebration, mind you this is at 2pm in the afternoon so before anyone starts to say this is outrageous behavior remember it is day 42 and it is the middle of the day.
We are still going forth with our planned vigil even though the police department is giving us alot of grief. Telling us where we can stand, what we can do, who can stand with us. I never realized that we live in such a police state! It is ok for individuals to throw eggs off a building but god forbid we are to stand in line on the sidewalk and sing songs at a candle light vigil.
Yesterdays post brought out a bunch of comments, one of which was surprising considering it is from Larry Abrams who used to work right here at the Kingsbridge Heights Rehabilitation and Care Center. It was nice hearing from you Larry, I didn’t realize you are still involved with KHRCC. I thought once you and Solomon left that was it for the both of you. Please do enlighten all of us with your knowledge of what is going on inside KHRCC, since you said yesterday
The Department of Health has been in the facility. I have spoken to few complaint investigators who are there daily. When a strike occurs, DOH goes in to be certain the facility is operating properly and the staff are acting appropriately.
How do you know they are here daily? Can you backup your words that all the staff are acting appropriately and the facility is operating properly? From the outside looking in it doesn’t appear to be operating normally but that is just me being a casual observer. Please share your wisdom and knowledge with us, you did add your comment yesterday so I assume you have more to offer.
Here is the video from day 42 on the strike line, I would say the members are happy to be receiving their due unemployment earnings. You would think that now is the time for Helen to get to the table and negotiate a fair contract, after all she is paying unemployment as well as paying the replacement workers.
Till tomorrow, STAND STRONG!
